Before you engage yourself with a soap making project, you have to know the two main ingredients which are lye and fats. Other ingredient used are fragrance oils and dyes for the scent and colors. Soap’s main ingredient is the fat which is responsible for the lathering qualities of soap. Whether it’s a hard or soft soap, the fats is responsible for the mild lathering of soaps. Lye works as the hydrolizing ingredeint which turns fat into soap. Fragrance oils and dyes are used by soap makers to add art and scent to the product.

There are two methods of soap making, the hot and cold methods. In the cold method, fat is simply added into the lye water mixture which is previously prepared. This is then mixed and poured into melts which had been dipped in cold water. The hot method is similar with the cold method but here, the fat is first heated before it is mixed with lye water. After that, the mixture is further heated for two hours before the soap can be used. Using the cold method for making soap produce a longer lasting product.

After the soap mixture is set, you can add other ingredients to make more aesthetically pleasing. When using dyes and molds, you have to do it properly so that you can create perfect miniatures of food, animals and other items. You may need to practice more before you can actually perfect the art of using different soap ingredients with the molds. Fragrance oils are added into the soap mixture for your product to have that scent you want, whether it is sweet, clean or flowery smells.

Before starting with soap making activities, you have to keep in mind that lye is a hazardous material which should be handles with care and caution. It has corrosive properties which can cause injuries so you have to protect your hands when using it. This ingredient also gives off dangerous fumes when mixed with water so you also have to avoid inhalation. Making soap can be a fun and exciting activity but you must not overlook the harmful properties of lye and always wear protection when doing a project.
